Mentzelia

This is a small group of erect growing annuals and biennials that come from North and South America. Their foliage is waxy, cut or toothed and 2 to 3 inches in length. The pretty, fragrant flowers grow up to 5 inches across and can resemble those of the daisy, cactus or passiflora. They are a creamy white to a greenish yellow color; some open at night.

Pot Cultivation

Mentzelia need a sunny spot and well drained, regular garden soil. It is advisable to add compost and sand. The soil should be moist to on the dry side; they will endure drought.

Propagation

Seeds should be refrigerated a week before planting. They can be started indoors at a 70-degree temperature, in pots of light, sifted soil; they should then be grown at a cool temperature (50 to 65 degrees) or where they are to grow outside when the soil is warm. They should be set 8 to 9 inches apart. They will re-seed themselves.
